Alexa is Amazon’s interactive voice assistant. It’s Amazon’s own Echo device. Available on echo speakers, soundbars, and your smartphone as well. Alexa is a voice that you can get the precise answers to the question like “What is the weather today in Scotland?”. Basically, Alexa is to amazon like Siri to apple. It has been integrated into many of Amazon’s services such as Echo Spot, Echo Show, or Amazon Fire TV. The name “Alexa” is derived from the library of Alexandria which is used to collect all of the world’s knowledge.
How does it work?
Alexa working on a cloud-based service. When you ask a question to Alexa, what you’re doing is communicating with a cloud-based service. Amazon has designed the Alexa Voice Service (AVS) to mimic actual conversations, but you’re using inherent voice commands to get this service to perform particular tasks. “Alexa” is a “wake word” that informs the service to start listening to your voice. Alexa Voice Service (AVS) exists in the cloud. It is intelligent voice recognition and natural language understanding service. This service can be used to voice-enable any connected device that has a speaker and microphone.
What can you ask Alexa?
There are plenty of things you can ask Alexa. You can choose your preference under the Skills section in the Alexa application. There are several categories within the Skills section that includes Music, audio, food, and travel, etc. Select the skill that suits you and click enable skill tap on the app to start.
Here are just a few examples of what you can ask Alexa to do:
- “Alexa, wake me up at 7 in the morning”
- “Alexa, shuffle my Favourites playlist”
- “Alexa, will it rain tomorrow?”
- “Alexa, what’s the weather in London?”
- “Alexa, what’s in the news today?”

Alexa in Smart Home
Smart home control has appeared as one of the most significant areas of Alexa’s influence. It’s no longer just about asking for the weather and playing music. It’s also about connecting and controlling the devices in your home. For example, you can connect Alexa to your lightbulbs, and turn it on or off easily with voice control. Connect your heating controls to check and change the temperature in your house via voice control. In this sense, Alexa is a great smart home controller. Once linked to Alexa you can access through anything that supports Alexa voice commands.
